Here is the full story.

MY GOAL
I want to go to a UC such as UCLA or UC San Diego. I am older and it is simply a dream of mine. It’s not that I think I’ll get a better job, or the prestige of the degree, but rather I want the experience and self satisfaction of knowing I did it. It’s my dream. I am begging you not to give me a lecture on what I should have done. I want to look to the future. I am really going for it, I want a degree in engineering. Preferably both Bachelors and Masters at a UC but I don’t mind getting my Bachelors at another institution as long as eventually it leads me to a UC for a masters. Hey I may go for a Ph.D but I’m getting ahead of myself now.

MY SITUATION
My academic record as a youth is not that great. My high school is “ok” but nothing outstanding. My SAT’s are B level. I went to a community college after high school. I worked and studied. When I realized I would not have enough (no loan, scholarship or money) to transfer to a UC, CSU or any other University, I decided to keep studying for the sake of it and forget my dreams (I know it was a bad idea). Miraculously I was a financial success.

1) In the process I sporadically earned close to 90 or so units in my community college.

2) I have only an AA degree in Liberal Arts.

3) I have few classes that fulfill the Major Transfer Requirements for the major I wish to transfer to at a UC. Particularly in math and physics. Yes, I gave those up when I gave up the idea of becoming an engineer. I mostly took classes in the humanities and some in economics. Yes I do regret not slowly taking those math and physics classes now, but there is no good in crying over what is done.

4) When last I checked my GPA was 3.1

MY PROBLEM
I am not asking for exactly what to do. I know that is beyond the scope of this site. I am however asking to be pointed in the right direction. Here are some of my questions.

Where and what should I begin asking?
Should I see a counselor at a community level college or is that a waste of time?
Should I just go to the UC and ask?
Should I just submit my admissions even thought I do not meet the requirements?
Even though I have an AA degree (with far too many units) will I have to take even more courses to satisfy the UC requirements for my intended major or will the extra units hurt me even further? If so then what should I do?
I do not mind getting a bachelors anywhere else if that gets me into a UC for a masters. Is that a good idea?
Should I go out of state (out of California) to acquire a bachelors and then come back to CA for a chance at a masters in a UC? I’ll even go out of the country if necessary. I have no problem going to to the UK, Australia or Canada if need be. Heck it might be fun to go even further and learn another language while I’m at it. I’m cool with French, Spanish or even Japanese.

Right now I feel confused but I have the determination. I will not stop or be discouraged. This is my goal, my dream and my life and I know that where there is a will there is a way. Any help is immensely appreciated. I am very serious about this. This is absolutely true. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you went to a community college in California, go to www.assist.org to find out which classes will transfer into your major at UCs and CSUs. You probably don’t have much more to do.

Many CSUs have transfer agreements with nearby community colleges. UCs and CSUs have different admission requirements, but I suggest following the IGETC (look at your CC’s website catalog to find out about the IGETC-it’s a life saver!). The IGETC will qualify you for UC, and the only additional requirement for CSU (as of a few semesters ago) is a speech/public speaking course.

(*edit: oh right, I should have read more carefully. You want to major in engineering. So the math and science routes are going to be more in-depth for you. In fact, IGETC probably isn’t recommended for your major. Any transfer guide will tell you to find out directly from the university which classes will prepare you for math-and-science-heavy majors. If the school has a specific college of engineering within the university, do some research on their website, they probably have transfer guides.)

You will only be allowed to transfer about 70 units, so many of your classes won’t matter as far as they are concerned. But who cares.

You should meet with a counselor, but honestly, it’s hard to find a really good one. Your college probably has a transfer center where you can learn how to research the process on your own, which is what I did.

I was kicked out high school and never graduated, went to community college at 21 and transfered to Berkeley at 24, so believe me, it can be done. If you want to get into a top-tier UC, you will need to improve your GPA. 3.1 isn’t bad, but UCLA, UCSD and UCB are competitive.

If you’re sure you want to go to grad school, you might want to go to a CSU and then to a UC. You will save some money, and if you end up in academia, it will matter less where you did your undergraduate work.

As far as your high school record and SAT scores go, they’re probably not going to care about them if you went to community college. I took the high school proficiency exam, and that’s all they needed to know. I never took the SAT and I don’t remember having to submit my high school transcripts.

I was wondering what exactly does an AA Degree do? Will I be able to transfer schools after I get it? Also on the international student site for UCLAN (In the UK), it says that they accept American students with an AA Degree… and I was wondering if there were any “catches”…. like do you have to take special courses in an American junior college if you want to transfer to a school in the United Kingdom… or do you just need an AA Degree in your field of study?
