So I set off early for the Utah Beach area, down the coast to the West for the town of Carentan. The D514 will take you along the coast past Omaha beach, Pointe du Hoc and Grandcamp-Maisy before swinging South and connecting with the freeway, N13. These back country roads prove a bit trying at times. As you can see by the pictures, they are narrow, two lane roads that twist and turn at every opportunity. Out of nowhere, a small village will pop up with four or five houses that you have to navigate through to get to the other side before continuing on. This wore on me quickly so when I got near St. Laurent-sur-Mer, I stopped to snap a few photos of the huge hedgerows that still exist today then changed directions to get to the N13. The N13 will take you right into Carentan. Carentan was of strategic importance to the allies. This is where the two beachheads (Omaha and Utah) would link up. It was also important to the Germans.
