Nina Garcia to Give Keynote Address at FIT’s Graduation Ceremonies on May 25
Nina Garcia to Give Keynote Address at FIT’s Graduation Ceremonies on May 25
(Vocus) May 19, 2010
Nina Garcia, fashion director at Marie Claire magazine and a judge on Lifetime TV’s Project Runway, will address 1,400 students when the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) holds its commencement exercises on Tuesday, May 25, at 10 am at Radio City Music Hall. The event will be live streamed at http://www.fitnyc.edu/commencement.
Innovative fashion designer Norma Kamali and toy industry leader Alan Hassenfeld, retired chairman and CEO of the international Hasbro Industries will receive Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees.
Nina Garcia is one of the country’s leading fashion authorities. Responsible for covering the designer fashion markets of New York, Milan, and Paris, she has been at Marie Claire since 2008. Previously fashion director at Elle magazine, a position she held for eight years, she also held positions at both Mirabella magazine and Perry Ellis. The author of three best-selling books on style—The Little Black Book of Style, The One Hundred, and The Style Strategy—her fourth book, Nina Garcia’s Look Book, will be published this fall. Garcia graduated from FIT in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing: Fashion and Related Industries with a concentration in Merchandising Management. She also holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston University.
Norma Kamali has established a legacy as one of the fashion industry’s most prolific and original designers, and as an astute entrepreneur. After graduating from FIT in 1964 as a Fashion Illustration major, Kamali began designing and sewing her own fashions without ever having made a pattern. Her prodigious talent produced one legendary creation after another, including her famed sleeping-bag coat, fashions made from Army surplus parachute silk, and high-heeled sneakers. She revolutionized women’s swimwear with bold designs and strong colors, and her seminal sweatshirt-fabric collection introduced the concept of activewear as everyday clothing. Today her fashions are available at every level of the marketplace.
As an entrepreneur, Kamali pioneered marketing innovations and remains at the forefront in making the most of new technologies. She was among the first to present her collection on the Internet and to launch a company website. She is now in the vanguard with transformational technology that lets shoppers buy merchandise from store windows using their cell phones.
Alan Hassenfeld has a long record as a progressive industry leader, children’s advocate, and humanitarian. During his 35 years at Hasbro International —the company begun by his Polish immigrant grandfather—4he steered a course through industry turmoil and economic challenges. With new products and a stream of strategic acquisitions over the years, Hassenfeld transformed Hasbro into the international toy and game company it is today. He also has been instrumental in the development and growth of FIT’s Toy Design program, the first toy design curriculum in the country.
Hassenfeld joined Hasbro in 1970 after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, held positions of increasing responsibility through the years, and became chairman of the board of Hasbro, Inc. in 1989. During his career, Hassenfeld established Hasbro as a global leader in children’s and family leisure time entertainment with a portfolio of world-known products such as Mr. Potato Head, G.I. Joe, Transformer robots, Scrabble, Monopoly, Tonka trucks, Playskool, and interactive electronic games.

Advantages…increased entry rank (E-3 vs E-1), increased promotion potential in the future (more promotion points when the time comes for E-5), an increased potential to access degree completion programs such as “Green-to-Gold” if you qualify in the future. It will have no bearing on bonuses or pay.
Disadvantages…none…other than it is not a BA and as such does not qualify you to apply for a commission.
What do you think? Answer below!

Henley-Putnam University Announces the Norbert Matts Memorial Scholarship
Henley-Putnam University Announces the Norbert Matts Memorial Scholarship
San Jose, CA (PRWEB) June 4, 2009
Henley-Putnam University is privileged to establish the Norbert Matts Scholarship in honor of Dr. Norbert Eugene Matts, whose dedication to those within the Strategic Security field provides an example for all of us.
According to Henley Putnam University President Dr. Michael Corcoran, “Faculty at Henley-Putnam teach because they love their topics, they understand their students and they know the ultimate reward for teaching is the contribution they have made to a stronger and better country. Dr. Matts embodied this principle.”
Born in Chicago, Ill., in October of 1937, Dr. Norbert Eugene Matts had a distinguished career in the United States Army where he served from 1954 until 1998, retiring at the rank of Major. He also had over 35 years of professional experience in business and occupational education; 25 years in administrative management positions in the business world, vocational education, colleges, adult education and career development.
“Because of Dr. Matts’ enthusiasm and commitment to the educational advancement of those within the Strategic Security field it was exceptionally distressing news when we learned of his passing peacefully in his sleep April 4, 2009. Having just told his family about how excited he was the previous day to begin his preparations to take on one of our doctoral courses, we have elected to continue that exuberance and commitment by establishing the Norbert Matts Scholarship program,” said Dr. Corcoran.
We offer this scholarship on a yearly basis to one of our Henley-Putnam degree students in the amount of $ 2,500.
Qualifications:
Applications are invited from Henley-Putnam University degree students in good academic and financial standing who are currently working in the Strategic Security field and who have demonstrated a proficiency in the development or continuation of the educational process for others in the Strategic Security field. This may be demonstrated in a number of ways; for example, teaching, curriculum development, training and course design, or teaching assistance.
This Scholarship will be awarded every (January) to a qualified applicant. Students will be allowed to accept this scholarship only once during their time at Henley-Putnam University, but may apply for the scholarship every year until awarded. Please contact Student Services for additional scholarship qualification requirements and an application.
More about Dr. Matts:
While in the military, Dr. Matts served as TAC. INTEL and Director of Security and Security Course Manager. He was Assistant Director of Intelligence, and designed courses for the Intelligence Center and AFLCITIC curriculum on terrorism at Fort Meade headquarters. During his tenure in the military he performed as Deputy Commandant and Assistant J1 for special operations and the Commandant for administration. As a member of the 9001 MID, he was involved with Terrorism Awareness Briefings and seminars on terrorism.
Dr. Matts’ background centered a lot around curriculum development of civilian, military and security personnel -thus the parallel of his work at Henley-Putnam where we serve the same Strategic Security industry. He was also a member of the early team that created “SWEEP” (Service Work Experience Education Program) and he interpreted many of the Navy/Army MOS for these classes as well as later wrote and instructed courses for personnel to earn college degrees (known as the SOCAD Manual).
Dr. Matts further exposed his never ending quest for knowledge by obtaining his Doctorate of Education from the University of Northern Colorado, his Doctorate of Business Administration from Indiana Northern University, his Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine from the American University of Natural Therapeutics and Preventive Medicine, an MBA from Indiana Northern Graduate School of Professional Management, his BS in Industrial Educations from Chicago State University, and his AAS in Industrial Relations and Social Sciences from Chicago City College and Olive Harvey College. In his spare time, when not lecturing in the areas of Communications and Business Management, he loved golf, fishing, reading and educational writing.
